Buy the Right Refrigerator
1. Choose a model from the TopTen list
The most energy-efficient refrigerators will save the average owner about $150 over a typical 12-year lifetime
2. Get the right size
Refrigerators under 25 cubic feet should meet the needs of most households, and larger ones use significantly more energy. The way the refrigerator is designed matters, too. Refrigerators may have the same number of cubic feet of interior space but much different real food storage capacity thanks to interior layout, height, shelving, and features such as icemakers or wine bottle shelves.
Consumer Reports uses its own approach to measure the usable space in a refrigerator, and the results are dramatic. Top freezer models average about 80% usable space, bottom freezers average 67%, and side-by-side units average 63%. That means you can buy a smaller top freezer model that holds as much as a larger side-by-side or bottom-freezer option.
3. Choose the top-and-bottom layout
Side-by-side refrigerators seemed like a cool innovation when they were introduced, but they use more electricity than top and bottom models, and offer less usable space. Choosing a side-by-side unit comes with an energy penalty in the range of 50-150 kWh per year (about 20% of total fridge energy consumption). Besides, they can’t accommodate large pizza boxes.
4. Consider your options
Studies suggest that an icemaker and through-the-door ice and water services can each add 10% to 15% to overall refrigerator energy consumption.
5. Minimize multiple refrigerators
Resist the temptation to move your old refrigerator to the basement or especially the garage for auxiliary purposes. It is generally much more efficient to operate one big refrigerator rather than two smaller ones. If you have a second fridge, just use it when you absolutely need it—around holidays, for example. Otherwise, keep it empty and unplugged.
6. Recycle your old fridge
Dispose of your old refrigerator properly. You can usually have the utility or the city pick it up; they might even pay you to throw it out.
